Here at NZ Parliament we’ll be celebrating this anniversary and the significant contribution women have made to Parliament all week (17 – 23 September), culminating in an event for people of all ages on Saturday, 22 September.
Throughout the day there will be a range of informative, engaging and fun activities on offer.
Take a ‘Celebrating Suffrage 125’ tour which will focus on historic events relating to women in Parliament. On the tour you’ll have the opportunity to visit key places within Parliament’s buildings, including the Women’s Suffrage Select Committee Room.
- The 60 minute ‘Celebrating Suffrage 125’ tour will take place at 10.30am and 1.30pm on both Saturday, 22 and Sunday, 23 September (as well as daily at 10.30am from Monday, 17 September to Friday, 21 September).
Bookings are essential. To reserve your spot, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 04 817 9503.
We’ll also be offering a selection of our standard tours throughout the day including, our ever-popular ‘Kids in the House’ tour, which will run at 10.15am, 11.45am and 3.15pm. Bookings are also essential for these tours.
Exhibitions and displays:
Visit our exhibition of works by female artists on display in Parliament House and browse our selection of suffrage related memorabilia from the Parliamentary Collection.
This includes an address to Prime Minister Seddon from the English suffragists and the silver and agate pen Seddon and the Governor reportedly used to sign the Electoral Act 1893 that gave women the right to vote.
Photos, crafts, food and more!
Back in 1893, the women of New Zealand spoke out for what they believed in and white camellias were worn by supporters of women’s right to vote. 125 years on, we invite you to leave a message for the suffragists, or share your hope for the future of women’s rights on our white camellia flower wall.
You can also get young ones involved in a simple craft activity - creating their own cardboard cut-out camellias to take home.
If you need a break after all that, you can relax and enjoy some treats at Parliament’s café, Copperfield’s. For just $25 per stand you can indulge in club sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, mini eclairs and more.
There’ll also be a kids’ platter available for just $8 per child including homemade jelly, a mini cupcake, a fairy bread sandwich and a chocolate chip cookie. Tea, coffee and cold drinks available for purchase.
Bookings are strongly recommended. Contact email@example.com for further information and to book your spot.
Finally, you’ll want to get a memento of your visit by taking a suffrage themed snap with your friends and family in our photo booth. You can even be joined by ‘Sir John Hall’ or a ‘suffragist’ if that takes your fancy!
