Stagecraft Theatre is excited to present the New Zealand premier of Polly Teale’s latest exploration of the complicated lives and novels of the three famous writers and sisters.
“Brontë” examines the apparently quiet domestic life of Charlotte, Anne and Emily Brontë and their troubled and troublesome brother Branwell. By looking beneath the restrained Victorian surfaces each woman presents, we discover how the writers were grappling with their own unquiet feelings, reflected in the exploration of the wild passions of Cathy from Wuthering Heights, or the violent desires of Bertha from Jane Eyre.
The play moves through time, following the family’s stories of scandal, unemployment, growing debt, sickness, loss and varying success. The tensions between the siblings paint a familiar scene of competition and jealousy, as each attempt to satisfy their own different desires, for fame, or fortune, or fulfillment.
