Bob Kerr

In July 1917 conscientious objector Archibald Baxter was marched from his Wellington prison cell. He was forced up the gangplank of the troopship 'Waitemata' and taken to the Western Front in France. There he was tied to a pole with his arms behind his back and his feet off the ground. This was Field Punishment Number One.

Nearly 100 years later, Wellington artist Bob Kerr has painted a series of striking images based on Archibald Baxter's book, We Shall Not Cease.

Kerr's specially re-worked paintings have, with the help of animator Ahmad Habash, been brought to life in a short film, with soundscape by Andrew Laking.

This production was completed with financial assistance from the WW100 Fund, and the Wellington City Council. Huge thanks also to the Wellington Museum.
