Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No 9 op. 125 D minor.
Born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany, Ludwig van Beethoven is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest composers of all time. His music was as radical as his political views and frequently shocked audiences with its innovative use of rhythm and harmony.
Beethoven’s ninth and final symphony was composed during a time of political repression and ultra conservative nationalism. Its calls for universal freedom and proclamations that all men are brothers were both daring and provocative.
The CSO is delighted to welcome Amanda Atlas, Sally-Anne Russell, Oliver Sewell, James Clayton and the combined choirs of the Jubilate Singers and Burnside High School Senior Chorale and the Christchurch City Choir to perform this joyous masterpiece.
Considered one of the masterpieces for violin and orchestra, Beethoven’s violin concerto contains moments of serene spaciousness, stunning virtuosity, and poetic depth. Returning as a soloist to perform this work is CSO Concertmaster and internationally renowned violinist, Martin Riseley.
