Malavika Gopal (violin), Alan Molina (violin), Sophia Acheson (viola), Ken Ichinose (cello)

Formed in 2015 by Malavika Gopal, this group is dedicated to pairing the core masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire with eminent contemporary and ethnic music.

Originally from Wellington, Malavika studied at the University of Auckland and New England Conservatory in Boston with Miriam Fried and Masuko Ushioda. She was a founding member of the prize-winning Excelsa Quartet that studied with the world-renowned, Alban Berg Quartet. She has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. After two years with the famed Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany she now plays with NZSO.

Alan Molina studied violin performance at Indiana University and went on to earn his Masters degree in chamber music at the San Francisco Conservatory. Following two seasons with the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas he spent four seasons as Principal Second Violin with the Charleston Symphony before moving to New Zealand.

Cellist Ken Ichinose is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, London, and has studied at the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Hochschule in Leipzig. Ken has performed numerous solo and chamber music recitals across Europe including venues in Italy, Holland, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, as well as the USA, New Zealand and England, including at Wigmore Hall in London. He was a founding member of the Galitzin String Quartet, building an extensive repertoire. Ken is also an experienced orchestral musician, having performed with the UK Philharmonia Orchestra and Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields. He is currently Associate Principal Cello of the NZSO.

Sophia Acheson, from Christchurch, NZ, studied performance viola in Wellington where she graduated with first class honours. She has also studied in Barcelona, the University of Southern California and the University of Texas at Austin learning the viola d'amore and viola da gamba. She is now principal violist of Orchestra Wellington. Apart from orchestral work, Sophia continues her interest in early music and chamber music.
