Hero Workshops

Join us to boldly go where no photographer has gone before!

Quail Island is a beautiful destination, but the regular ferry schedule does not work for landscape photography. So we decided to team up with the nice people at Black Cat Cruises, and literally, carry a boatload of photographers across the turquoise waters of Lyttelton Harbour. Our kind sponsors Fujifilm NZ and Photo Warehouse will bring along a few toys to play with. Get free tips, tricks and advice from two Fujifilm X-Ambassadors.

Our guided photo walk will conclude with a sunset shoot by the historic boat wrecks. This is a unique opportunity for anyone who does not own a boat!

All proceedings of this event, including the charity photo contest, go towards the Quail Island Conservation Trust. Yay for a good cause!

While our meetups have always been free, we decided to charge a small booking fee of $10 for this event. The proceedings will go towards the Quail Island Conservation Trust, and be used to preserve the island's rich nature and history. Tickets with a higher donation amount are available if you feel generous.
You are welcome to show up at our departure point to buy a ticket on the spot. But please be advised that we cannot guarantee that there will be any spaces available on short notice. Watch our Facebook event for last-minute updates.
Charity Photo Contest:
Upload your best photos from Quail Island and win the popular vote. Black Cat Cruises will donate $1 for every vote (up to $500) to the Quail Island Conservation Trust. The winner receives two ferry tickets to Quail Island. Another two tickets go into the draw for a randomly selected voter.

Terrain & Fitness:
Please note that we will be moving across uneven terrain. Most of the photo walk will take place on maintained paths and tracks. Some locations, like the path to the ship wreck, will be more precarious in nature. Feel free to shoot from the main paths if you are uncomfortable with the terrain. You can expect to walk for 2-3 hours.
We will be returning in the dark, so please bring a torch.
What to Bring:
We will be in an exposed outdoor location with uneven terrain. Please bring appropriate clothing:
- Warm layers
- Windproof/Waterproof layers
