Melanie Carter
A Senior Instructor of composition and creative writing at The American University in Cairo, Carter was a recipient of AUC’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2012. Her poetry has been published in The Gettysburg Review, Antioch Review, and Best New Poets as well as other journals, and her book manuscript was a finalist for the Yale Series of Younger Poets award.
Carter has held an artist’s fellowship at The Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies (USA) and residencies at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre (Ireland) and the Hambidge Center for the Creative Arts and Sciences (USA).
Wairarapa Word has invited Melanie Carter to be a featured poet for National Poetry Day 2015 in the Wairarapa. She will share her poetry right next door at Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre on Friday 28 August 28, at 7am, in a special event called "Birds & Words".
Melanie is working on two projects at New Zealand Pacific Studio — a poetic narrative and an essay that emerged from her experience at an artist's residency in Finland. Melanie Carter is the NZPS House Manager.

Ruth Taylor & Auke de Vries
After years of working in the television industry in The Netherlands, animators Ruth Taylor and Auke de Vries are now traveling the world to spend more time on their personal artwork. New Zealand is the fourth stop of the seven countries they'll visit, each at a different artist residency.
Ruth Taylor is an animator and illustrator. At the art academy, she started mainly with illustration, but after a while considered that the possibilities of moving images were also very interesting. Animals and nature are a recurring theme in her work. She loves creating detailed illustrations, and the painstaking work of animation does not keep her from putting those details in a few seconds of animation, frame by frame.
Animator Auke de Vries graduated from the Art Academy St. Joost and uses a wide variety of animation techniques in his work, such as stop motion, mixed media, and computer animation. He strips down complex stories to tell their essence in a simple way and puts the real world in perspective by creating his own, usually with a bit of humour.
