Enjoy the smooth jazz vocals or Briar Ross with her trio performing jazz standards in the style of Billy Holiday and Dianna Krall. Briar will be following her performance at The Hamilton Garden Arts festival the day before.

“I love the old tunes form the 30s 40 and 50s", says Briar "but I really like to find songs that are not regularly performed. I especially like the sultry ballads but dancing to more up beat tunes is encouraged."

Briar lives on Waiheke Island where she performs regularly and organizes Jazz events at vineyards over Labour Weeekend and Easter. This Easter Briar is running jazz vocal performance workshop followed by a concert that students can perform in on Easter Monday.

Briar has made 4 cds with many of Aucklands top musicians.

Her band for this event will include pianist John Wilcox and Hamilton Bass player Stu Lawrence
John Wilcox Coromandel connection. “In 1926 my late father Jerry Wilcox began his long teaching career at the then Coromandel District High School, boarding at the Golconda Hotel where he was part time barman. He was the Sole Secondary Assistant, which meant he taught all classes of secondary students in all their subjects. He played rugby for the Coromandel team, and for the representative side Goldfields, well before it became known as Thames Valley. Jerry later played rugby for Waikato from 1930 to 1932. After retiring from teaching in 1965 as principal of Avondale Intermediate School, he led a relaxed vegetable gardening lifestyle prior to his passing in 2000, aged 95. He always said that Coromandel gave him a great start to his life in teaching.”

The venue, Allambee Cottages, was recently purchased by Joan Castle and has cottage accommodation. The grounds has orchard that slopes down to a pond which will make a perfect sunset venue.

BYO is permitted and it is suggested that guests bring something to put on the grass to sit on.
“Allambee Cottages” is just 1.5kms south of town on the main road in from Thames. There will be ample parking in the paddock and if you would like to come along early to enjoy your picnic the gates will be open from 5 p.m.
