Travel with Steam Incorporated on one of our new series of “Scenic Daylight” excursions, featuring recently restored diesel locomotive Da1431.

Sit back and relax while we take you through the Manawatu & Rangitikei areas to your destination of either Waiouru or Ohakune. Travel over many impressive viaducts, enjoy the landscape of the Rangitikei River Valley and the mountain vistas of the central plateau. This year's ski season has been extended to 4th November, so there should still be plenty of snow on the mountains.

Complimenting Da1431 the train will comprise our fleet of classic red “steel” cars. There will be an open air viewing platform on the train

You can choose from one of two main destinations, Waiouru or Ohakune.

At Waiouru you have the option of visiting the National Army Museum. This is New Zealand’s most comprehensive army museum with a unique collection of military exhibits, memorabilia and public research material. Must see exhibits include:
- new – medal repository;
- Tears on Greenstone Memorial;
- Life-like displays;
- Iconic military hardware;
- Comprehensive weapons collection;
- Research Library.

The army museum is a 350 metre (5-minute walk) from the railway station. A café and gift shop are also located at the museum. Group admission: adult $12, child $5.

For those selecting Ohakune as your destination, we expect a one-hour stopover here while we turn the loco on the turntable and allow the southbound Northern Explorer train to pass through. There will also be the option of a quick minibus trip up to the Turoa ski field, weather permitting. Cost $15 each. There are several eateries near the station including a café in the station building.

The train will include a buffet counter selling burgers, sausages, sandwiches, drinks and snacks, and a souvenir counter for all sorts of railway and steam memorabilia.

We will make several other stops during the day for photo opportunities and a leg stretch.

You can board the train at Paekakariki, Paraparaumu, Waikanae, Otaki, Levin, Palmerston North, Feilding and Marton.

Special offer: Book & pay by 15th October and receive a complimentary morning & afternoon tea on the train.
