Opera Brava presents An Evening of Opera.
An evening of arias, duets, trios and quartets by Beethoven, Bizet, Delibes, Dvorak, Lehar, Mozart, Mascagni, Puccini, Rossini and Verdi.
Pamela Wallace – soprano
Winner of NZ Herald Aria and NZ National Vocal Awards. Pamela was runner up in the Mobil Song Quest in 1991. Awarded AGC Young Achievers Award and Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council Scholarship. Pamela studied in London with Mme Vera Rozsa (teacher of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa) and in New York with Frances Wilson. Pamela has performed in opera and recitals throughout England, Europe, USA & NZ. Highlights include performing the Premiere of Paul McCartney’s “Liverpool Oratorio” in Holland. In 2011 she was the soprano soloist in the Premiere of “Conversation between Theremin and Soprano” composed by David Sidwell.
Elaine Wogan – soprano
Elaine has appeared as soloist with NBR New Zealand Opera, Opera Waikato, Garden Opera, Opera Unleashed, Opera Du Jour, Opus chamber Orchestra, Christchurch City Choir, Christchurch Symphony, Auckland Philharmonic, Cantando, Hamilton Civic choir, and the Renaissance singers. She regularly performs alongside Dame Malvina Major, in her capacity as a committee member of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation.
Elaine has recorded several original songs for the CD “Te Takoha/ReGenesis” by Marian Mare, which, as well as concert performances with APO, have received play on National radio/Concert FM. Elaine sang on “This is your life Dame Malvina Major”, and at the launch of the Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation in 2004.
Chase Douglas - tenor
Chase was awarded the 2011 Waikato Young Singer of the Year, a 2011 University Blues Award for Excellence in Creative and Performing Arts plus the Pou Ahurea Award for Maori Person of the Year 2011. He was awarded the Kerby Bursary for Graduate Music Studies 2012 and has been a Sir Edmund Hillary scholar at the University from 2009-2012. Chase’s performances to date have included: the 2011 Rotorua Lakeside Concert; 2011 Hayley Westenra Tour; Anna Hawkins 2012 Concert and Handel’s Messiah in Thames and Whakatane. Chase is currently completing his Bachelor of Music with Honours at the University of Waikato under the tutelage of Dame Malvina Major.
John Drummond – baritone
John has worked with the New Zealand Opera Company, the Auckland Symphonia Opera Company, Opera Waikato and many Musical Theatre Companies. John has performed in two Royal Command Performances and was a soloist at the Auckland Civic Reception for Princess Margaret. He has played principal roles in over 30 productions as well as being a soloist in many oratorios. In recent years John has performed with an Austrian soprano, Marianne Koestler-Medek and their performances have been so well received that they have given many concerts in Shanghai, Zhuhai and Macau.
Francis Cowan – accompanist
Originally from Wellington, Francis completed a Bachelor of Music at Victoria University majoring in Piano Performance with Judith Clark. He was appointed Director of Music at St. Mark’s Church School in 1989 and founded the Capital Boys’ Choir.
Francis moved to Hamilton in 1994 to take up the position of Director of Music at Southwell School. While there he had the opportunity to indulge his passion for choral music and music theatre through the Chapel Choirs and Annual Opera.
He was appointed Director of Music at St Paul’s Collegiate School in 2009. Francis has recently conducted the school’s performance of Les Miserables. Outside the school he is involved with the Hamilton Civic Choir and as accompanist for opera performances and singers.
