Defining the new - rediscovering the familiar.
CJC is proud to present the Benny Lackner Trio as part of their Asian tour.
German-American jazz pianist Benny Lackner lived in the US almost 20 years, and about half of that in NYC. In the States he studied at the California Institute of the Arts under the direction of Charlie Haden and his mentor Brad Mehldau.
Lackner has played many major jazz-clubs and festivals but it was his trio that got a name for its personal way of interpreting standards as well as covers of songs of the current generation. He believes that interpreting contemporary songs using melodic hooks and grooves is the new trend in jazz. His Trio's approach to both its original material and compositions ranging from Monk to Prince fuses intensity with unintrusive virtuosity. These reharmonizations of the familiar give the traditional form of piano trio a new identity and purpose in our own time.
Since 2008 Lackner has been traveling between Brooklyn and Berlin. He moved back to Berlin this year and released his new a new album, Cachuma, two months ago, which reached number one on Amazon jazz downloads. The songs are inspired by places in Berlin and his journey back to his roots; he even has a song called "Brooklyn/Berlin."
"Benny Lackner has a distinctive compositional voice that sounds lucid and fresh. He's found a cool way to write for this trio." - Brad Mehldau
"Lackner may be the first established pianist to come from the Mehldau school. With a contemporary approach, he helps give the piano trio a much-needed facelift." - John Kelman, AllAboutJazz.com
