New Zealand Symphony Orchestra
Conductor: Uwe Grodd
The mighty Austrian composer Anton Bruckner left behind one of the most loved Romantic choral works with his last Great Mass in F Minor. Commissioned by the Royal Chapel in Vienna the musicians refused to perform it and declared it as “… too difficult and unplayable.” Subsequently, Bruckner hired the opera orchestra and the conductor Johann von Herbeck, who quit after the dress rehearsal; Bruckner had to conduct it himself. We are indeed proud to present this work with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and a magnificent quartet of soloists, including husband and wife team Amanda Winfield and Ravil Atlas in their Auckland debut. In the first half of the concert John Wells will thrill with the power of the restored Town Hall organ, Bruckner’s favourite instrument.
Also featuring:
J S Bach Fantasia & Fugue, BWV 542
Naji Hakim Rubaiyat
Andrew Carter Aria
