Dr Pauline Harris from Victoria University in Wellington will present her knowledge of some of the basic concepts of Tātai Arorangi (Māori Astronomy) in a lecture this Friday at the Arts Centre.
In her fascinating lecture, she will discuss how the celestial bodies were used to measure time, planets and navigate across the oceans. Dr Harris will also present some of the results of a project designed to revitalise and preserve this ancient knowledge.
The lecture will take place in Rutherford’s Den lecture theatre, The Arts Centre. After the lecture attendees will be invited to visit the Townsend Observatory in the South Quad of the Arts Centre to view the night sky through the 6-inch Townsend telescope, which dates from 1864.
Entry to this event is by koha ($5 suggested). Seating is limited to 50 people only.
